How we know how old a name is

Social Security has counted the babies given every first name, every year, since 1880. Its actuaries also publish life tables: the share of people born in each year who are still alive at each age. Multiply one by the other, year by year, and you get an estimate of how many people with a name are alive today and how old they are.

That's the whole trick, and it works because names follow fashion. A Mildred is almost certainly older than a Madison. We publish a page for each of the 3,713 names with at least 5,000 people estimated alive, and a quick estimate for 100,000 more in the search box.
